About the spot

Tulum is a Caribbean sea spot on the Riviera Maya, where kitesurfing fits naturally into a relaxed beach holiday. Check the wind at the station in the morning, head onto turquoise water and rest under the palms between sessions. Schools operate along the coast, but this is not a sheltered teaching lagoon: chop, shorebreak and swimmers all need attention. For early sessions, a local instructor can help you choose a safe launch. More experienced riders can combine freeriding with wave-riding lessons.

What to pay attention to

Do not launch among beachgoers. Agree on the launch point with the school and assess shorebreak and wind direction. Offshore wind requires organised rescue support. Do not expect wind every day.

When to come for the wind

Mexican Caribbean Kitesurf lists the main season from November to the end of May. Kitecamp Tulum highlights January-April as the best months. This is a guide for choosing a trip: the real day is determined by the forecast and the state of the sea.

Two schools, two meeting places

Kitecamp Tulum operates at the Maya Tulum Hotel and offers training from the first steps to advanced kitesurfing as well as rental. Mexican Caribbean Kitesurf teaches at Ahau Tulum. Check the name of the hotel and the entrance to the beach: the stations are in different places.

The sea, not the lagoon

According to the description of Kitecamp Tulum, the usual work directions are to the shore and at an angle to the shore. But the beach does not automatically become safe: the water has bathers, and the surf changes. Before leaving, ask to show the training area and the place of return.

If the wind didn't come

You can leave the day for a walk, cenotes or SUP under the conditions. Schools also organize trips to other areas of Yucatan: the route, weather and cost are agreed separately. Isla Blanca and El Cuyo are other spots, their photos are no substitute for Tulum's shots.

How to plan the road

Choose to arrive via Tulum or Cancun airport and agree on the transfer in advance. The city of Tulum and the beach hotel area are different points: check the address of the station, access to the beach and the meeting place.

Before paying, check with the receiving team the place of study and the nearest comfortable accommodation. “Hotel by the sea” and “hotel by the kite zone” do not always mean the same thing.

Where is it?

The marker shows the area, not the exact launch point. Find the station address and permitted area at the school.

Questions before travel

How to choose the time of the trip?

November–May – often January–April – a reference point for planning. Before paying, confirm the season at the local school and check the forecast for travel dates.

What to ask the school before booking?

Where the lessons are held, what the size of the group is, whether the equipment is included, what language is taught and how the rescue on the water is organized.
